Mesa Community College DJs Bring Fresh Local Talent to Taiyou Con

Music has become another part of the atmosphere at Taiyou Con, and a growing collaboration with Mesa Community College is giving local DJ students an opportunity to perform for a live audience while adding something different to the anime convention experience.

Taiyou Con is proud to be part of the Mesa Community College DJ program and curriculum. Students have the opportunity to take the skills they develop during the semester and put them into practice at a live event, with Taiyou Con serving as their end-of-semester performance test.

For attendees, it means the soundtrack of Taiyou Con gets an infusion of new local talent each year. For students, it means taking what they have practiced in the classroom and performing inside a real convention environment.

Bringing Mesa Community College DJs to an Anime Convention

DJing in a classroom and performing in front of an audience are two different experiences. Technical skills are important, but a live environment also requires DJs to understand the atmosphere around them, adapt their music, manage transitions, and create a sound that complements what’s happening at the event.

That’s where Taiyou Con comes in.

As part of the Mesa Community College DJ curriculum, students get an opportunity to perform during an established anime convention in Mesa, Arizona. Rather than performing only for classmates or instructors, students can apply what they have learned in an environment filled with convention attendees.

Taiyou Con provides an especially interesting setting because the music isn’t happening in isolation. Attendees are moving between activities, meeting friends, shopping, cosplaying, taking photos, and exploring the convention while the DJs provide background music throughout the experience.

A Performance Test in a Real Event Environment

Taiyou Con’s music programming includes both Resident DJs and Mesa Community College DJs, with each serving a different purpose.

Taiyou Con’s Resident DJs are familiar faces who can return year after year. They provide continuity and help establish the musical atmosphere of the convention. As the program grows, returning attendees may begin recognizing the DJs who have become part of their annual Taiyou Con experience.

The Mesa Community College lineup, however, changes as new students progress through the DJ program. That rotating lineup means new local talent can be introduced each year, keeping the convention’s background music fresh while giving another group of students the chance to perform.

Together, the two programs create a combination of familiar returning DJs and emerging Arizona talent.

Music as Part of the Anime Convention Atmosphere

An anime convention is about more than what happens inside panel rooms. The experience also comes from everything attendees encounter while walking through the event.

Cosplayers fill the convention center. Attendees meet anime voice actors, browse Artist Alley, shop in the vendor hall, play games, take photos, meet friends, and move between activities throughout the day. Background music can help connect those spaces and create energy even when attendees aren’t watching a scheduled performance.

The goal isn’t to turn every part of Taiyou Con into a concert. The DJs instead help provide a soundtrack to the convention itself, adding to the atmosphere while attendees enjoy everything else happening around them.

Taiyou Con has a long history in Mesa. The anime convention was originally held at a Mesa hotel before moving to the Mesa Convention Center in 2015, where it has continued to grow. Creating a relationship with Mesa Community College is another way for the convention to connect with the community where the event takes place.

The DJ program gives local students a platform to demonstrate their skills while allowing Taiyou Con attendees to discover new talent from the area. Because the MCC lineup changes, the program can also introduce a new group of performers to the convention each year.

It’s a relationship that works naturally for both sides: students need opportunities to perform, while Taiyou Con is always looking for ways to make the convention experience more interesting for attendees.

Anime, Cosplay, Music and More at Taiyou Con

The Mesa Community College DJ program is just one part of a weekend filled with things to experience at Taiyou Con. The Arizona anime convention brings together anime voice actors, cosplay, gaming, panels, Artist Alley, vendors, music, food, and entertainment at the Mesa Convention Center in Downtown Mesa.

Adding Resident DJs and MCC student DJs gives music a continuing presence throughout that experience. Returning attendees can hear familiar Resident DJs while discovering a changing lineup of Mesa Community College students putting their skills to the test.

For Taiyou Con, it’s another way the convention can continue evolving while remaining connected to its home in Mesa.
